10 Hiking Essentials

What Should You Carry With You When You Are Hiking?
What you need will vary based on where you are going and for how long, but the list below has become the standard list of items to be prepared for most situations.

Do I Really Need All Of This Stuff?

Hopefully, you will not need to use some of the items on this list - but if something unexpected happens, you will be VERY happy that you are prepared.

10 Essentials:

1) Navigation: Smartphones have become fantastic resources, but it is common to not have reception in more remote areas. Having a map and a compass are always a good idea.

2) Light: Flashlight, headlamp and extra batteries

3) Sun protection: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses

4) First Aid: first aid kit, insect repellent, emergency medications (ex. inhaler, EpiPen, Benadryl)

5) Tools/Repair kit: knife or multitool, duct tape, patch kit for tent

6) Fire: lighter, matches, stove

7) Shelter: tent, emergency blanket

8) Food: take more than you think you will need

9) Water: Take more than you think you will need, water purifier

10) Clothing: rain gear, extra layers of clothes
